Planting Trees for Peace in Mexico
The Peace Club of Leon joined the Government’s Reforestation Program. México has one of the largest biodiversities in the world, in particular of the genus Pinus. However, several Pine species and locally adapted pine populations are endangered by a high rate of deforestation.
The Club Members, planted about 300 trees around the city.
Ana Maria Abe, Six Billion Paths to Peace Correspondent and support member of the Six Billion Paths to Peace Club said, “We care about our mother earth and try to help cultivate a conscience in small children and youth of the environmental issues by actually planting trees.
Now is rainy season, we hope the trees will grow up fast.”

The young people spent five days in June – 5th, 13th, 20th, 4th, and 25th planting trees. One volunteer said, “We can have fun planting trees together.” Another young volunteer said, ” I wanted to do this before, but I couldn’t find a chance. When we do this activity in a group it is easier and better.”
“The first day was the most exciting,” says Ana Maria, “We learned, for the first time, to plant a tree.” Although it was a very hot day it was also a very special occasion with the visit of the Mayor of Leon, Ricardo Sheffield.
His speech inspired the Club Members and everyone felt that this was a day that they would never forget.
