In Memory of Robert Sargent Shriver

Shinnyo-en Foundation extends sincere condolences for the passing of Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., who was known as “a longtime advocate for the poor and the powerless,” and would like to honor his lifelong dedication to public service.Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., father of Maria Shriver, passed away at the age of 95 of Alzheimer’s disease on January 18th, 2011. He had been battling the disease since 2003.

He was the leading force behind the implementation of Peace Corps, War on Poverty programs and the Special Olympics. Shriver was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, from President Bill Clinton in 1994. President Obama released a tribute in which he referred to Shriver as “one of the brightest lights of the greatest generation.”
