On 6 September, 2007 Harumitsu Inouye and SEF staff visited the United Nations Under-Secretary General for the Department of Public Information Kiyo Akasaka at his office, while attending the 60th Annual UN DPI NGO Conference at UN Headquarters in New York City.

Mr. Akasaka greeted us warmly, expressing how pleased he was that we were attending the NGO conference held under the auspices of his department.   He was very interested in the work of the foundation and commended us on our endeavors to bring about more peace in communities, at a grassroots level.  He spoke briefly about the work being carried out at the UN, highlighting some of the areas of great concern at this time.  He pointed out that the Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon was unable to make remarks at the opening session of the NGO conference as he was in Darfur making efforts to find a solution to the problems there.  He also mentioned that though there were still various problems in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, the UN was relentless in its efforts to bring about peace and stability in all regions.

He gave us words of encouragement to continue doing good work to bring about more peace and harmony in the world.

Mr. Akasaka also is very involved with the STAND UP and SPEAK OUT, a worldwide call to take action against poverty and inequality and for the Millennium Development Goals.  For more information or to see how you can take part in local STAND UP and SPEAK OUT activities in your community, please vist www.standagainstpoverty.org
