Harumitsu Inouye, Ed.D – Chief Executive Officer

Since the inception of the foundation, Haru has served as the Executive Director as well as a member of the Board of Directors.  His academic and professional backgrounds include multi-cultural and international education as well as intercultural management in both non-profit and for profit organizations.  He also serves at the Shinnyo-en Head Temple in Burlingame, California.  He enjoys gardening, in which he sees a parallel between human development and the gardening process; from planting seeds, nurturing them with water and fertilizer, and ensuring they get sufficient sunlight.

Henry C. Lozano – Executive Director

Mr. Henry C. Lozano has recently become the Executive Director for the Shinnyo-en Foundation.  Mr. Lozano is dedicated to advancing the Foundation’s Six Billion Paths to Peace Initiative extending around the world through its international partnerships. On September 11, 2007 Mr. Lozano was appointed by President George W. Bush as the Deputy Assistant to the President and the Director of the USA Freedom Corps. As Director, Mr. Lozano advanced the President’s “Call to Service” initiative launched at the 2002 State of the Union. Prior to Mr. Lozano’s tenure as Director of the USA Freedom Corps, Mr. Lozano was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on the Corporation for National & Community Service Board of Directors from 2003-2007. In 1998, President William J. Clinton appointed Mr. Lozano to serve on the President’s Advisory Commission for Drug-Free Communities from 1998 – 2002. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush at the President’s National Leadership Forum sited Mr. Lozano as one of the top ten coalition leaders in the nation.

Paulette Nagle – External Affairs Manager

Paulette has had extensive experience working with a number of institutions aspiring for positive social change.  To name a few, she has worked with the California State Department Alcohol and Drug Programs in her capacity as Special Deputy to the Director of Prevention and has also served the non-profit sector with her work with Californians for Drug Free Youth to eradicate illicit drug use and prevention of these actvities. Paulette enjoys her work at the Foundation as the expert in External Affairs as she has the opportunity to interact with so many interesting partners on a daily basis.  In her free time she enjoys tennis and gardening.

Abigail Nathanson  – Program Coordinator

Abigail Nathanson received her Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Leadership with an emphasis in Student Affairs from the University of the Pacific in 2006. Her graduate work focused on the connection between service-learning and moral development of college students. After graduate school, Nathanson worked at the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University with the Fellowships Program. Her areas of interest within service-learning include critical service-learning pedagogy, anti-oppression initiatives and interfaith dialogue.

Frank Skaj – Controller & HR Manager

Frank comes to the Bay area after growing up in Minnesota and receiving his Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s University, majoring in Business Administration – Accounting. He has worked as an accountant / controller for various industries including transportation, retail, manufacturing, engineering; and most recently for the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group in Yountville, California. Frank is an avid golfer and has also helped coach his daughter’s basketball and softball teams.

Mariko Terazaki – Communications Director

Mariko has a Master’s degree in Political Science and has worked in the field of corporate communications and public relations for both the public and private sectors.  A former Officer at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Director of Public Information for HSBC Japan, she has extensive knowledge in the area of public relations and uses her skills to reach out to the public on behalf of the Foundation.  Her work with the Foundation covers a wide array of activities that include, inter alia, media relations, event planning, publication production, and marketing.  In her free time she enoys art and music (the ballet in particular) and spending time with her family.

Ineko Tsuchida Ph.D. – Associate Director of Programs

Ineko joined the Foundation as program manager in October 2007. She develops and implements educational materials for the Foundation’s Six Billion Paths to Peace initiative. As one of her responsibilities, Ineko also serves as liaison to leading academic institutions in peace education, peace studies, and service-learning as director of the Shinnyo-en Foundation’s Fellows Program. Working at the Shinnyo-en Foundation builds on Ineko’s lifelong passion to improve the lives of children and their families.  She was program director for a California state subsidized daycare center in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, and she has continued to serve this community as a board member of the Bay Area Women’s and Children’s Center. For her doctoral research at UC Berkeley, Ineko conducted a cross-cultural study on teachers’ classroom management and student responsibility. As a research associate at the Developmental Studies Center in Oakland, Ineko investigated and published studies on educational policies, elementary science education, and teachers’ professional development in Japan. She also managed the evaluation of a mathematics curriculum in San Francisco Bay Area elementary schools. Ineko served as associate director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Stanford University. She also taught classes and supervised teaching credential students at San Jose State University. More recently, Ineko coordinated the development of California’s Preschool Learning Foundations for WestEd’s Center for Child and Family Studies. Ineko has a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from San Francisco State University and a Master’s and a Ph. D. in Educational Psychology from UC Berkeley. She enjoys cooking, reading, knitting/crocheting and spending time with her family and friends.
